Singer/songwriter/pianist Angela Ortiz creates a musical world unlike any other. From lush melodies to clarinet choirs to simple piano and vocal, Angela is able to actualize a unique sonic vision that stretches beyond the parameters of traditional pop music.
A native of western NY and the daughter of two schoolteachers, Angelas approach to music is studied yet natural. Her songs deal with everyday issues such as disappointment and gratitude, self-doubt and self-involvement, shyness and the shattering of illusions; but also touch upon larger subject matter, like the mechanization and digitization of the world and the necessity of questioning political authority. She says of her choices, Songwriting forces me to pay attention--to celebrate minutiae, but also to put the little pieces together to try and understand The Big Idea.
Angela began teaching herself to play the piano at the age of seven, largely influenced by the Motown artists her father adored, and the early 80s alternative that her brother listened to. At 16, Angela began studying voice privately, and followed that path into college. She enrolled in Ithaca Colleges acclaimed School of Music, and subsequently, NYUs performing arts program where she earned a B.Mus. in vocal performance. My teachers expected a lyric soprano. she says. They wanted me to get more training and audition for young artist programs at big opera houses. But I wasnt wholly connected to opera, I had other things in mind. |
